Creative Health & Wellbeing
What is Creative Health, and why does it matter?
We frequently hear the term ‘Creative Health, but what does it mean?
Most of us have an instinctive and personal interpretation, but perhaps the most widely accepted interpretation of Creative Health refers to the use of arts, culture, and creativity to support people’s health and wellbeing. It's a growing field that bridges artistic practice with healthcare, social care, and community development, showing how creativity can actively contribute to physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
At its core, creative health is the practice of using creativity to enhance health and wellbeing outcomes. It includes activities such as:
Music, dance, visual arts, creative writing, theatre, and ‘the making of things’ in community settings
Social prescribing of arts activities
Designing health spaces with artists to promote healing environments
Public health campaigns using creative methods to effectively communicate a message
The UK’s National Centre for Creative Health (NCCH) defines it as “placing creativity at the heart of health and social care.”
Everyone can engage with Creative Health. You don't need to be an expert- just a willingness to explore.
Our bi-weekly programme is designed to be a welcoming starting point for anyone looking to enhance their wellbeing through creativity, learn new techniques, and be part of a community, all within a relaxed and friendly environment.
‘Art is Cheaper than Therapy’
Art in the Docks has been working together with the local communities of Newham, east London to establish which activities have the greatest impact to people’s sense of wellbeing, and to find ways to ensure that these can be made available on a sustained basis.
We now have a loyal following of people of all ages and backgrounds who engage in, and contribute to, a rich programme of creative activity bringing positivity to people’s lives.
