The Stratford Geezer
Robert Reimagined
Art in the Docks to explore an opportunity to reposition ‘Robert’ the steam locomotive at Stratford station as a participatory public artwork.
As the Stratford Geezer, we believe that Robert has the potential to become Newham’s ‘Fourth Plinth’ - a flagship East London rotating public artwork programme rooted in community and emerging talent.
This vison is rooted in Newham’s industrial heritage. Our intention is to deliver this with local residents, young people, and students studying in the borough.
As it stands, Robert is a distinctive but relatively underutilised asset at a major gateway into the borough. We believe there is potential to transform Robert into a highly visible, community-led piece of public art: one that evolves over time through collaborations with schools, universities, and local creatives.
As one of Newham’s leading community arts organisations, with regular involvement in the GLA Royal Docks Team culture and placemaking strategies, Art in the Docks can leverage an existing track record of delivering large-scale, participatory programmes, including community parades, heritage projects, and ongoing regular community engagement programmes. Together, these annually reach over 7,000 Newham residents.
The intention is to design something that is relatable, reversible, positive, engaging and aligned with Public Realm requirements, while offering strong cultural and placemaking value.
As Robert approaches his 100th birthday, it would be good to have him looking his best.
