Shaping Places Together

How creativity builds stronger communities and helps people shape the places they call home.

A place is more than its buildings, streets and public spaces. It is the people, relationships, stories and shared experiences that give it life.

At Art in the Docks, we believe communities already hold much of the creativity, knowledge and capability needed to shape their neighbourhoods. The opportunity is to recognise that potential, create the conditions for it to flourish and invest in it over time.

Through sustained, locally rooted creative programmes, we bring residents, artists, schools, businesses and community partners together to imagine, make, learn and shape experiences that reflect the places they belong to.

Our ambition goes beyond delivering individual workshops, events or projects. We want to help build neighbourhoods where people feel connected, valued and confident to contribute; where local voices influence what happens; and where creativity becomes part of everyday community life.

From creative activity to lasting community impact

We have seen how a creative activity can become the starting point for something much bigger. A workshop can introduce neighbours to one another. A parade can give residents a shared experience and a reason to take pride in their neighbourhood. A regular creative session can become a familiar place to meet, build confidence and feel less isolated.

It is not just the activities – it is what happens in between that matters most.

The conversations before an event, the friendships formed during a workshop, the confidence that grows through returning, and the ideas that emerge when people begin to trust one another: these are important parts of the value we want our work to create.

Our approach is rooted in three beliefs:

1. Recognise the creativity and capability already there

Every neighbourhood has its own knowledge, skills, stories and ideas. Residents are not simply audiences or beneficiaries; they are people with valuable perspectives and the ability to contribute to the places they call home. We seek to listen, recognise existing strengths and make room for local voices to shape activity.

2. Create the conditions for people to participate and flourish

Authentic co-creation takes more than an invitation. It requires welcoming and accessible opportunities, time to build relationships, trust, continuity and a genuine sense that people's contributions matter. We use regular creative activity to help make those conditions possible.

3. Invest in what lasts beyond the project

We want the value of creative work to extend beyond the day an event ends or a funded project concludes. That means nurturing skills, confidence, relationships, local leadership and opportunities for people to remain involved and influence what happens next.

What this looks like in our neighbourhoods

Our work in the Royal Docks brings these beliefs into practice in different ways:

Bringing neighbours together through shared experiences

Through participatory projects and community celebrations such as Carnival of Curiosities, Into the Night and Bells and Whistles, residents come together to create, collaborate and celebrate. These experiences help animate shared spaces, create opportunities for neighbours to meet and strengthen a sense of belonging.

Creating regular opportunities for connection and growth

Our children's creative sessions and school partnerships give young people opportunities to explore ideas, develop creative skills and build confidence. Our creative health and wellbeing sessions provide welcoming spaces for people to connect, express themselves and take part in shared experiences.

Connecting people, ideas and local resources

By working alongside residents, artists, schools, cultural organisations, academic institutions and place-based partners, we help create opportunities for collaboration. These relationships can open doors to new ideas, shared projects and wider opportunities for local people.

“The real measure of our work is not only what we create with a community, but what a community becomes better able to create for itself.”

Art in the Docks — Creative Neighbourhood Stewardship

The change we want to see

We want to contribute to neighbourhoods where:

  • People feel they belong: residents have more opportunities to meet, build relationships and feel connected to their community.

  • People have a voice: local knowledge and lived experience help shape activities, projects and decisions affecting neighbourhood life.

  • People grow in confidence and capability: creative experiences help develop skills, confidence, expression and the ability to contribute.

  • Communities have greater agency: residents have stronger relationships, networks and opportunities to take ideas forward.

  • Neighbourhoods become more vibrant and inclusive: shared spaces become places where people can meet, participate, create and take pride in their surroundings.

  • Opportunities are better connected: local people, community organisations and institutions can work together to create opportunities that continue beyond individual projects.

We recognise that lasting social change takes time and cannot be attributed to one organisation or activity alone. Our role is to contribute to the relationships, opportunities and conditions that help make that change possible.

Looking beyond what we deliver

We are developing our thinking around Creative Neighbourhood Stewardship: an approach that places people, relationships and long-term community capability at the heart of creative placemaking.

It asks us to look beyond what happens during a project and consider what becomes possible afterwards. Who has developed new skills? Who feels more confident to contribute? Which relationships have grown stronger? What ideas are residents now able to take forward? And how can local people continue to influence the future of their neighbourhood?

For us, the measure of success is not only what we create with a community, but what a community is better able to create for itself.

We believe the future of a neighbourhood should be shaped with the people who know it best.

Be part of shaping places together

Whether you are a resident, artist, community organisation, school, funder or potential partner, there is a place for you in this conversation.

Let's explore what becomes possible when creativity, relationships and local knowledge come together to build stronger communities.
